Highgear SmartDynamo 10057

Date Published: 11/28/07

The Highgear SmartDynamo (model 10057) is a multifunctional radio that packs a huge number of additional features into its compact design. Made from high-impact plastic, this clever device measures approximately 6-1/4 inches wide, 2-1/4 inches tall and a mere 1-1/4 inches deep. Even so, you get an AM/FM radio with crystal-clear reception, a bright LED flashlight, an emergency alarm and a cell phone charger. The SmartDynamo is weather-resistant and comes with a wrist cord, so you can take it with you in the car, to the beach, on a bike ride or hiking through the woods.

The SmartDynamo delivers excellent reception, including a full range of FM stations. AM performance is less impressive, with only the strongest local stations coming through. In addition to a tuner dial, the SmartDynamo has a volume dial that lets you crank up the sound to surprising loud levels, especially considering the small speaker size.

One of the SmartDynamo's best features is its hand-crank power supply. A 3-inch crank handle turns an internal generator that charges the built-in rechargeable batteries, and it folds flat against the casing when not in use. Winding is relatively easy, with only a small amount of resistance. Constantly replenishing the SmartDynamo with wind-up power means you don't need batteries, although this unit takes two AAA batteries (not included) to use as a backup power supply.

When you use the SmartDynamo for the first time, you need to wind the crank for about 10 minutes to fully charge the rechargeable batteries. This can be an endurance test, but a slow cranking pace works just fine, so there's no need to overtax your arm muscles. In fact, 5 minutes of cranking is sufficient to use both the light and the radio, but 10 minutes is necessary to ensure a full charge.

The SmartDynamo comes with a phone-charging power cord with several adapters to fit the most popular cell phone designs. This feature proves invaluable in emergency situations when you are caught without a ready power supply. The included adapters fit models by Samsung, LG, Nokia and Motorola.

For a handy radio, flashlight and cell phone charger that never needs batteries, all in a compact package, take a look at the Highgear SmartDynamo.

Pros: Hand-crank charger means you never need batteries, multiple cell phone adapters included, excellent FM reception, compact package
Cons: Limited AM reception
