Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 475 photo printer with integrated hard drive

Date Published: 8/18/06

The Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 475 may look like a toaster, but it's actually a versatile photo printer that can print from a variety of sources as well as store a bundle of photos on its built-in 1.5GB hard drive. You can also connect it to a TV to wow family and friends with a slide show. Even better, you can print photos on request during the slide show.

The Photosmart 475 is easy to set up, although you must supply your own USB cable (around $10 to $20) if you want to connect to a computer or a PictBridge-compatible camera. Four memory card slots accept most currently popular card formats, and a 2-1/2-inch color LCD lets you preview photos before printing.

The Photosmart 475 supports printing resolutions of up to 1,200X1,200 dpi monochrome and up to 4,800X1,200 dpi color. Output quality is very good to excellent, with vibrant color, good contrast and rich detail in shadows and highlights (depending on the quality of the photo, of course). The paper input and output trays can hold up to 20 sheets of paper each. The Photosmart 475 can print 4X6-inch, 4X8-inch, 5X7-inch and 4X12-inch (panorama) photos, with or without borders.

Two features help the Photosmart 475 stand out from the crowd:  the integrated hard drive and the ability to connect to a TV. The latter option allows you to view your favorite photos on your TV screen, as well as print photos on demand. You can use the hard drive to store photos on the road and free up your digital camera's memory card.

The package includes a power module and cord, a tricolor inkjet cartridge, a TV/video cable, a set-up poster, a remote control (battery included) and a CD-ROM with electronic user guide and drivers. The CD also includes software such as HP Photo & Imaging, HP Share-To-Web (Windows only) and HP Instant Share.

The Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 475 is a versatile printer that you can take almost anywhere. The built-in hard drive is a major plus, and the output quality will not disappoint.

Pros:  Excellent output quality, 1.5GB hard drive for storing photos, supports wireless printing with optional adapter, supports optional rechargeable battery that can print up to 75 photos between charges, can print from computers and most memory cars, PictBridge-compatible
Cons:  Relatively slow output speeds

Warranty
1 year, limited
