Hewlett-Packard LC4776N 47-Inch 1,080p LCD HDTV

Date Published: 5/21/08

The LC4776N is the largest model in Hewlett-Packard's LC76N series. This 47-inch LCD HDTV is encased in a shiny piano-black body, and it comes with a tabletop stand that can be detached for mounting the unit on a wall. The native resolution of 1,920x1,080 means the LC4776N can display every pixel of 1,080i HDTV broadcasts, and the unit then up-converts the picture to 1,080p. Unfortunately, when it comes to appearance and performance, the LC4776N leaves us feeling distinctly uninspired.

The LC4776N is not ugly by any means, but compared to many competing LCD sets, this model's design appears a little dated. If you have been having a hard time selling your significant other on a large-screen TV dominating the living room wall, the LC4776N isn't the unit to swing the argument in your favor.

More importantly, despite the 1,080p resolution, this set's performance won't move you either. While the LC4776N delivers reasonable color accuracy, the weak blacks and poor shadow detail make for an overall washed-out picture. This problem is made worse by the lack of extensive picture controls. There is no adjustable backlight on the LC4776N, ;nor does it have pixel-to-pixel mapping for some aspect ratios. Add a general dearth of convenience features such as PIP, and the LC4776N has the overall feel of a stripped-down model aimed at novice users seeking nothing more than a basic display.

The menu system is similarly aimed at beginning HDTV users. As well as a standard, well laid-out menu, HP has also included a separate menu that provides access to only basic controls, so an inexperienced user will not have to worry about accidentally making crucial picture adjustments. For a basic LCD HDTV, the LC4776N does offer a solid array of connectivity options. These include three HDMI ports, two component video inputs and composite and S-video ports, as well as an optical digital audio output to connect to a home theater receiver and surround sound system. The LC4776N also offers a VGA-style PC input.

The 6-millisecond response time ensures that there is no motion blur visible on screen, even during fast-moving sports or action-packed movies. HP claims the LC4776N offers a 176-degree viewing angle, but while the viewing angle is certainly much improved over older models, as with many other manufacturers' LCD TVs, the LC4776N still loses clarity and color toward the outer edges of this range. The unit also includes an infrared remote control, although this lacks a back light.

Despite 1,080p resolution and decent color accuracy, the uninspiring design, weak blacks and meager feature options make it difficult for us to recommend the Hewlett-Packard LC4776N.

Pros: True 1,080p resolution, accurate colors, 3 HDMI ports, dedicated PC input
Cons: Poor black levels, uninspiring design, few convenience features, aimed for novice HDTV users

Warranty
1 year, parts and labor; in-home repair
