Hewlett-Packard iPAQ rx1955

Date Published: 3/8/06

HP's iPAQ rx1955 Pocket PC is one of the lowest-priced PDAs to include built-in Wi-Fi. It's also a reputable PDA for offline use, letting you get work done away from the office and then send it back when you're finished.

The rx1955 weighs only 4.4 ounces, so it's incredibly portable. It still offers a good-size 3-1/2-inch TFT display that renders sharp images and readable text. The screen is touch-sensitive and can be manipulated with the included stylus or a fingertip.

The curved design of the rx1955 is quite comfortable to hold, with four hot buttons and a five-way navigation button at the bottom of the PDA for thumb control of menus. There's also a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack for listening to music and a built-in voice recorder for some quick dictation.

With the Wi-Fi connectivity built-in, you don't have to configure an add-in card. You just enable the wireless functionality, and you're able to connect to the internet in any hotspot to grab your e-mail or check the latest stock reports.

The power core of the rx1955 is more conducive to office applications than handling multimedia. Its 300MHz processor is fine for web browsing and document editing, but it's on the low end of today's multimedia PDAs. There's also only 96MB of memory--with a maximum of 36MB of user-available persistent storage room--so if you want to listen to more than just a few tunes or store a lot of recorded voice on this iPAQ, you'll need to spring for an SD card for more storage.

The rx1955 runs Windows Mobile 5.0 Premium, which offers a lot of improved features such as better viewers for Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, as well as enhanced battery life.

HP offers a 1-year warranty on the rx1955, plus 90 days of technical support for the included software. The HP iPAQ rx1955 Pocket PC retails for under $300, a great price for a PDA with built-in Wi-Fi. If you don't need extensive multimedia power, the iPAQ rx1955 is a very compact and connectable PDA.

Pro:  Built-in Wi-Fi, light, good battery life
Con:  Limited memory

Warranty
90 days technical support for included software, 1 year parts and labor
