Hewlett-Packard iPAQ hx2495

Date Published: 6/30/06

Hewlett-Packard's iPAQ hx2495 is expensive, but it is certainly loaded with features and capabilities for any user on the go. This model weighs in at less than 6 ounces, but it still boasts a large 3-1/2-inch LCD screen that displays images and video brilliantly.

Inside the hx2495 is a powerful 520MHz processor with 256MB of total memory, up to 192MB of which is user-accessible. Even if you run out of storage room, the PDA features both SD and CompactFlash memory card slots, so you can get inexpensive Flash memory cards with lots of additional capacity.

The front of the hx2495 is typical of other iPAQs, with four quick-access buttons that can be configured to your needs, as well as a D-pad for manipulating the on-screen cursor. This PDA features a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can use it as a digital recorder as well.

HP has incorporated a lot of connectivity into this iPAQ. The 802.11b wireless means you'll be able to check your e-mail or browse the web in any wireless hotspot. Web pages load quickly and browsing is enjoyable with the stylus and the hx2495's touchscreen. In addition, this model has Bluetooth connectivity, so you can synch it to your Bluetooth-enabled PC or cell phone and connect it to Bluetooth peripherals such as keyboards and headphones.

The hx2495 has a rechargeable battery inside, and you can recharge by either using the included charger adapter or placing it in the included desktop cradle, which is also used for synching with a computer. HP also bundles a protective plastic cover that keeps the screen from getting scratched when it's not in use. The cover flips up out of the way when you require access to the touchscreen and controls.

The hx2495 runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Premium Edition, which includes handheld versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as Internet Explorer for web browsing and Media Player for handling music and video files.

This model isn't cheap, but it is powerful. If you need a PDA with versatile functionality and a great display, the iPAQ hx2495 is a device to get your hands on.
