Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 5940 color inkjet printer
Date Published: 6/1/06
The Deskjet 5940 is similar to the Deskjet 5440, with some advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, the Deskjet 5940 has slightly faster print speeds and the ability to accept high-capacity ink cartridges. On the negative side, this printer has a slightly lower output quality, particularly for text and line art.
The Deskjet 5940 can print to the usual variety of paper sizes and stocks, including letter, legal, envelopes, card stock, label stock, iron-on transfers and borderless photos, as well as banners up to 24 inches long. The automatic paper sensor adjusts the printing to suit the type of paper.
The paper input tray can hold 100 sheets of plain paper or ten envelopes, and the output tray can hold 50 sheets of plain paper. Both paper trays can be folded up when not in use. The Deskjet 5940 uses two ink cartridges (black and tricolor), which are easy to install. For the best color photo quality, you can swap the black cartridge for a photo cartridge.
The Deskjet 5940 supports printing resolutions of up to 1,200X1,200 dpi (rendered) for monochrome printing and up to 4,800 dpi (optimized) for color printing. Output quality is good for text and graphics, and good to very good for photos. Not surprisingly, you'll get the best photo results with the photo inkjet cartridge, but photo quality is satisfactory even with the standard tricolor cartridge. The Deskjet 5940 is better at printing photos than the Deskjet 5440, but it is not quite as good at printing text and graphics, particularly line art. Output speeds are slightly above average. The built-in HP Adaptive Lighting and HP Auto Red-Eye Removal technologies can automatically eliminate red-eye and lighten up dark areas of color photos.
The Deskjet 5940 is bundled with a black inkjet cartridge, a tricolor inkjet cartridge, HP Image Zone Photo & Imaging software (for basic photo editing, photo organization and sharing photos via e-mail), a setup poster, a user guide, a power supply and a power cord.
Pros: Good output quality of text and graphics, good to very good output quality of photos, reasonably fast print speeds, accepts high-capacity inkjet cartridges, can print directly from PictBridge-compatible digital cameras and camcorders
