Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 460c Mobile
Date Published: 2/19/08
The Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 460c Mobile isn't the smallest portable printer available, and at 4.6 pounds (5 pounds with the optional battery), it also isn't the lightest. But it's versatile, it travels well and it offers some attractive features that may make up for its minor size and weight issues.
Connectivity options include a USB port, a CompactFlash slot and a Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard slot, all of which support PictBridge-compatible devices. To make this printer truly portable, you can add Bluetooth or 802.11g wireless connectivity, as well as a battery.
The 460c's height allows it to use Hewlett-Packard's high-volume inkjet cartridges. These cartridges are widely available and relatively inexpensive, so the 460c's per-page consumable costs can be lower than those of competing portable printers.
Paper handling is limited to a single 50-page input tray; this tray can also handle up to five envelopes. The printed page exits from the front of the printer. There's no output tray to speak of, just a small door that opens when the printer is in use.
We find this model's print output quality to be quite good. Text is solid, with clean edges and good detail, even down to very small font sizes. Color output is very good with the standard four ink cartridges. You can also use an optional tri-color cartridge and a gray photo cartridge to achieve a six-color printing system that can produce impressive photos, particularly for a portable printer. Output speeds are so-so, with black draft prints well below the specified 17ppm, but speed isn't usually a major consideration for a portable printer.
The Deskjet 460c Mobile is a satisfying choice for frequent travelers. Its output quality is well above average, and options are available to meet almost any portability need. Ideally, we'd prefer a smaller mobile printer, but the advantage of being able to use less-expensive ink cartridges may be worth the tradeoff.
Pros: Very good print quality, low consumable costs for a portable printer, plenty of optional features
Cons: A bit large and heavy, print speeds are on the slow side, options can significantly raise the overall cost
