Hamilton Beach 3-in-One Slow Cooker 33135
Date Published: 2/20/08
The Hamilton Beach 3-in-One Slow Cooker 33135 is literally three slow cookers in one. This unit comes with a shallow heating base and three interchangeable stoneware crocks, in graduating sizes. A single glass lid fits on any of the crocks.
We loved the versatility of this unit, which completely eliminates the issue of size when making a slow cooker purchase. Because some meals are designed for a larger crock, and others cook better in a smaller crock, the Hamilton Beach 3-in-One Slow Cooker satisfies all scenarios. You can simply choose the size best suited to the task at hand.
We tested the 2-quart crock with a quick bread recipe, which cooked beautifully in a little over an hour. Since we sprayed the crock with nonstick cooking spray prior to cooking, the bread lifted easily from the crock. For another test, we made a beef stew in the 4-quart crock. We filled the bowl almost to capacity and cooked the stew for close to nine hours (even longer than the stated time requirement) with wonderful results.
When we tested the 6-quart crock, we noticed that only half of the crock was submerged in the base. To compensate, the unit's cooking temperature is increased, even on the low setting, so that the ingredients cook thoroughly. After several hours, the liquid in the base reached a temperature of more than 220 degrees, considerably higher than average.
This model is styled in brushed stainless steel, with black trim and coordinating black stoneware crocks. The base is round with a 12-inch-diameter, plus two side handles that extend another 2 inches on either side. The base (minus its crock) stands about 6 inches tall -- much shorter than traditional slow cookers -- yet it provides ample heat for cooking. Even when using the largest crock, which sits a full 4 inches above the base, the cooker does its job well. In fact, there are three pushbutton controls on the front of the unit that let you specify the chosen size crock, so that the unit adjusts its temperature accordingly.
When not in use, the three crocks nest inside one another for easier storage. The three stacked together are noticeably heavier than a single crock. The unit's two side handles are bolted in place for added stability when lifting or moving the appliance. The three stoneware crocks are oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. They are also handy for assembling ingredients the night before and refrigerating, then placing both crock and lid on the base in the morning to begin cooking.
The Hamilton Beach 3-in-One Slow Cooker has four heat settings: Off, Keep Warm, Low and High for a full range of cooking and serving options. Low is the preferred setting, if time allows. During use, the exterior does get quite warm to the touch. The bottom and handles have a stay-cool coating to protect countertop surfaces and hands from accidental scalding. Our only disappointment was that there was no indicator light to signal that the unit was operating.
