Halo UV-ST Ultraviolet Vacuum

Date Published: 11/14/07

The Halo UV-ST Ultraviolet Vacuum is an innovative cleaning tool that combines two well-known technologies: vacuum suction and ultraviolet light. The result? The Halo UV-ST is a workhorse of a vacuum that offers powerful suction and the ability to kill germs and other unseen critters in carpet.

The Halo has an ultraviolet light panel built into the underside of the main vacuum head; the UV light is behind the main rotating bristles. A very basic explanation goes like this: UV light is divided into three basic categories, including UV-A (also known as blacklight), UV-B (used in tanning salons) and UV-C (often used, for example, by water purification plants for its germicidal effects). The Halo uses UV-C light to destroy bacteria, dust mites, flea eggs, viruses and other invisible germs living in carpet. To do so, there is a switch on the vacuum that activates the UV-C light and its germ-fighting abilities -- without chemicals.

The Halo doesn't follow the current bagless trend. Instead, it uses a bag that includes a HEPA filter and odor-reducing carbon filter (the idea is similar to odor-trapping carbon filters used in air purifiers). Thanks to these filters, the bag traps pollen and dust mites, as well as other pollutants that can kick up allergy symptoms. The Halo's onboard attachments include a generous 13-foot detachable hose, crevice tool and dusting brush.

We like the Halo's sturdy design and quality build. It has a wide cleaning path and can be used on carpet and bare floors, thanks to easy-to-make height adjustments. On carpet, the Halo performs well. It suctions the pesky stuff (pet hair), the small stuff (dust) and the big stuff (a grain of sand, a broken chip) with ease.

While we are pleased with the Halo's performance, we do find it important to note that buying additional bags is an extra, ongoing expense (even if it is only $7.99 for a set of three bags). That said, the Halo UV-ST Ultraviolet Vacuum is a solid performer built of durable materials that offers an innovative take on an age-old problem: the irritants left behind after vacuuming.

Even if a carpet "looks" clean, we feel better knowing the Halo's ultraviolet light is eliminating germs and other pollutants. This vacuum is especially ideal for allergy sufferers and people with pets or young children.

Pros: Germicidal UV-C light, powerful suction, use on carpets and bare floors
Cons: Price

Warranty
1 year; lifetime on bulb
