The Haier Toaster Oven Broiler RTO1400SS is beautifully designed in gleaming stainless steel with chrome and black accents. This unit offers baking, broiling and toasting ability at a very affordable price.

Haier took a traditional rectangular design and bowed out the center edges to give this unit somewhat rounded contours on the sides and top. Its dimensions are 18-1/10 inches wide by 14-7/10 inches deep by 11-1/2 inches tall. The contrasting black and stainless steel give the RTO1400SS a striking appearance.

This model has just two dials: Temp (with settings from 200 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and Broil) and Timer (with settings from 0 to 60 minutes). There is also a power light that shows when the unit is heating. Because there are no function settings (i.e., toast, bake, broil), the unit operates similar to a standard oven in that the function is determined by the temperature setting.

The timer is handy for pre-setting a toast of bake time. A soft ticking sound can be heard while the timer is counting down. After the time has elapsed, a bell sound will be heard and the unit will shut off.

There are two lower and two upper heating elements, which begin working the moment the timer is turned on. In terms of functionality, the Haier RTO1400SS delivers above-average performance with baking and broiling tasks. The interior can accommodate cake, pie, and casserole dishes up to 8.75x11.5 inches. It also comes with its own baking/broiling pan, which is actually deep enough (1.5 inches) for casseroles. The sturdy pan is constructed from light colored aluminum and is suitable for all sorts of tasks, from baking cookies to broiling hamburgers.

There is some guesswork involved with toasting, since there is no actual "toast" setting. The instructions indicate that you should begin with a medium heat setting and time. It took us several tries, with both undercooked and overcooked batches of toast, before we settled on a temp of 400 degrees Fahrenheit as the optimum setting. The capacity is four slices; however, we achieved the best results when we toasted only two slices at a time.

The Haier RTO1400SS has a sliding wire rack, with two positions. The lower position is best for baking and the upper position is for toasting or broiling. You also get a useful wire handgrip, which lets you move the wire rack and/or baking pan forward and out of the oven safely.

We did notice the surface of this unit got quite hot during use, especially the oven door, so use caution not to let the top edge of the door rub against your fingers as you open it. The full-length door handle stays comfortably cool.
