Haier HLP20E 4.9-Pound Capacity Pulsator Compact Washer
Date Published: 6/17/08
The smallest compact washer available, the Haier HLP20E 4.9-Pound Capacity Pulsator washes just a few articles of clothing at one time and is one of the least expensive ways to equip a tiny home or apartment with an automated method to wash clothes. This washing machine does have its challenges, only one of which is capacity, so keep this in mind before you are sold on its low price.
First of all, if you have it shipped to your home, some assembly will be required. Although the assembly is not too difficult, it can be confusing because the directions are loosely translated into English from Chinese. The metal plate packed in the box needs to be affixed with the Chinese letters facing out in order to assemble properly. Also, some of the packing materials may appear to be part of the product when they are not.
Once we assembled the HLP20E we found it to have enough features to handle simple laundry needs. It is capable of washing in hot, warm or cold water, and has three water level selections and four wash cycles. Leveling legs allow you to stabilize it on most floors. If you will need to roll it to the sink, make sure you order the optional casters.
When using this model at the sink, affix the water hose tightly to the faucet with the plastic o-ring adapter. To prevent leakage, make sure the ring is very secure with the faucet. Next, secure the drainage hose over a sink or drain. You will want to make sure it can't come loose, because there is the potential that all the water will drain on your floor. Keep in mind you will also need access to a standard 120-volt power outlet for its power source.
After running laundry in this washer, clothing may retain some water. Experiment with the various cycles to find one that works best for what you are washing. Removing as much water as possible from clothing is recommended, otherwise hang-drying time may be long. Just keep in mind that at this price, you cannot expect the convenience, performance or capacity of a full-size washer.
Pros: Least expensive of its kind, three water temperatures, four cycles
Cons: Requires careful connection to sink and drain, capacity is tiny
