H&R Block TaxCut Premium-State-E-file offers a tax software package value that's tough to beat. For a mere $60, you can both prepare and e-file a federal tax return and a state tax return. We still find Intuit TurboTax to be a bit easier to use, and slightly more comprehensive, but TaxCut is closing in fast.

We were particularly impressed with one change in this year's version of TaxCut: less verbiage. The interview process isn't as wordy or as tax jargon-laden as it used to be, which is a relief for those of us with somewhat short attention spans. The graphics are also simpler, with colors that are easy on the eyes.

In addition to interface and content improvements, TaxCut Premium offers something special that its competitors don't: peace of mind. If the worst happens, and you're the target of an IRS audit (and you have e-filed your federal tax return), an H&R Block Enrolled Agent will help you prepare for the audit, as well as represent you, if you request it.

You can navigate TaxCut using the tabbed interface or the standard menus. As in previous versions, you can let TaxCut lead you through the process of completing the necessary forms, or cut to the chase and complete the forms manually, in any order you choose. TaxCut can import financial data from Intuit Quicken and Microsoft Money, as well as 2005 versions of Tax Cut and Intuit TurboTax. It can also download 1099 and W-2 information from participating banks and other financial institutions.

The package includes a free copy of DeductionPro (normally $19.95), which can help you get maximum credit for common non-cash donations, as well as cash donations, medical expenses and mileage.
