Graco iMonitor 2791DIG1

Date Published: 7/31/07

The Graco iMonitor 2791DIG1 lives up to its promises by generating crystal clear sounds at a surprising range.

We tested the monitor at a distance of up to 2,000 feet without losing contact with the base unit in a baby's nursery. Also, the sounds coming through the parent unit are very clear -- there is very little static and no interference from nearby cordless telephones or other electronic devices. Because the monitor uses digital technology, there is little risk of signal obstruction from structural objects or other items such as mobile telephones.

The monitor's parent unit has an out-of-range indicator, which we find is a helpful feature. If the parent unit begins to lose the signal from the monitor's nursery unit, an indicator light changes from green to red. The indicator light also doubles as one of the sound indicator lights. We prefer the out-of-range light as a stand-alone indicator, but we find that it works adequately, in part because there is a continuous beep if a connection to the nursery unit has been lost.

Other than its impressive digital range, the Graco iMonitor offers several features that are standard on most monitors. Both the parent unit and the base unit can run on either batteries or A/C power. Although interference is minimal with digital monitors, there is a choice of channels to help minimize obstruction. A handy docking station can be used to charge the parent unit. The parent unit comes with a standard belt clip.

We feel that a second parent unit would be a useful addition, though is a slightly more expensive version of the Graco iMonitor that offers dual parent units. Our testers appreciate the added security of two power sources for the nursery unit. This ensures that even if the electricity goes off, three AAA batteries will keep the unit operating. On a purely aesthetic note, the nursery unit's base is small and unobtrusive.

The Graco iMonitor may not feature a lot of innovative extras, but it is a quality monitor with a powerful range.

Pros: Clear, crisp sound at extended range up to 2,000 feet
Cons: The tested model comes with one parent unit
