GoVideo R6740 DVD recorder
Date Published: 2/12/08
The GoVideo R6740 is an inexpensive component that delivers competent performance as both a DVD recorder and player, but it does have its limitations.
The quality of the R6740's recordings is better than average, although there are some compatibility issues (see below). In addition, the R6740 doubles as a functional DVD player with progressive scan playback, which provides optimum picture quality when connected to a digital TV via the component video output. Front-panel IEEE 1394 (DV) and composite video inputs make it easy to connect a DV camcorder or VCR for transferring home movies to disc, and the R6740 has an optical digital audio output for sending Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals to a full-feature home theater receiver. There are also rear-panel composite video and S-video inputs.
A significant drawback involves playback compatibility. The R6740 records to either DVD+R or DVD+RW, and DVD+RW recorded by the R6740 are generally able to play on other DVD players. However, content recorded to DVD+R from certain manufacturers is unlikely to play in other DVD players. In addition, commercial DVD-Video from several movie houses, particularly Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures, do not start playing until after a bothersome delay. To rectify these issues, GoVideo offers a free internet download to update the R6740, but this is an annoying step to be required to take.
This DVD recorder has a built-in NTSC (standard-definition) tuner, a 1-year/five-event timer, and a choice of four recording speeds. Set-up and navigation via the onscreen user interface is quick and simple, and GoVideo even includes a blank disc with the R6740 so you can begin recording straight away. All functions are controllable with the included remote control. Overall, GoVideo's R6740 performs well as a DVD recorder and player, but the compatibility issues (and their solution) diminish the unit's user-friendliness.
