George Foreman Next Grilleration GRP4

Date Published: 4/24/07

The Next Grilleration in the George Forman grill line adds a contemporary look and removable grill plates to make grilling more convenient than ever.

This unit is styled in white with a black front lip that acts as a handle. A slimline design measures 15-1/2 inches wide by 11 inches deep, with a 72-square-inch cooking surface. The long, narrow surface is ideal for cooking three hamburgers, side by side. We suspect that the lip design, which hangs over the front edge, helps to keep heat and moisture inside, where it belongs.

Like the other Foreman grills, The Next Grilleration has a floating hinge design that lets it adjust to different food thicknesses. As a general rule of thumb, the thicker the foods, the longer the cook time. We were able to cook 1-inch boneless chicken breasts in about 10 minutes. Extra-large Panini sandwiches also posed no problem for this grill, since the grill plates simply lifted up and over the stuffed sandwiches.

This unit also has the traditional slanted grill plate with raised ridges that leave distinctive score marks on the cooked foods. The plates themselves are nonstick; however, a thin coating of oil or cooking spray will ensure smooth release with non-greasy foods such as vegetables, chicken breasts and crusty Panini breads.

Besides its expert grill performance, this unit's claim to fame is the removable plates, which lock in position during grilling and then unclip for easy cleanup in the sink or dishwasher.

Standard accessories for The Next Grilleration include two plastic drip trays, a plastic spatula for scraping the grill plates and a specially designed sponge for cleaning the nonstick plates.

One bit of advice: When grilling fatty foods, such as burgers or those that tend to drip, be sure the drip tray is properly positioned in front of the lower grill plate. It's a simple matter, but failure to do so will result in a mess of grease on your counter.

We were pleased to see that The Next Grilleration also has the handy power light that signals while the unit is heating and cycles on and off during cooking. This grill took about 7 minutes to preheat and maintained a consistent temperature while cooking multiple batches. The unit will remain on until you unplug the power cord.

Pros: Removable nonstick grill plates, power light
Cons: Drip tray can become dislodged if bumped
