General Electric Spacemaker WSM2480 washer-dryer

Date Published: 5/16/07

The General Electric WSM2480 is the smaller of the two Spacemaker stacked washer-dryer combo units; it is designed for a 24-inch wide space. Of course, this means it has a smaller, compact capacity, but in return it can be placed in homes where space is limited.

We like this design because it has a long history of use and a proven track record in the United States. Repairmen find it familiar and easy to work on. It's also fairly affordable for a stacked model.

On the other hand, the conventional design of this product will leave you without many of the technological advances that have recently hit the laundry room. The WSM2480 lacks many of the automated settings that take the guesswork out of setting your washer and dryer. For example, rather than offer automated water level settings, this machine has three mechanical options. Rather than use a sensor to gently dry clothing, the WSM2480 employs a thermostat that is harsher on clothing. With this dryer, over-drying and its resultant damage is a possibility, if you're not careful to monitor the heat. GE's combination model also lacks the energy efficiency of the newer and more expensive, front-loading units.

Still, although basic, GE's WSM2480 is reliable. The basic features don't differ much from the unitized laundry combos we've been seeing for many years. Two wash spin speeds are provided -- one for normal and one for more gentle washing action. Three cycles vary the length of the cycle and adjust the speed for washing regular, permanent press and delicate loads. A choice of three drying cycles covers just the basics: regular, permanent press and air fluff.

A lightweight machine, the WSM2480 doesn't have the heavy construction of the more expensive models. It also lacks the durable stainless-steel drum that so many manufacturers are touting.

If you're shopping for a basic, reliable, washer/dryer combination and want to keep the expense to a minimum, you will want to consider this model. It provides what has been the industry standard for years. GE's practical WSM2480 gets the wash done at a reasonable price, while avoiding expensive new technologies.

Pros: Budget priced, time-tested technology, fits in many small spaces
Cons: Lightweight construction, lacks many of the new technologies, thermostatically controlled dryer
