General Electric Profile PFSS5NJWSS Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator

Date Published: 2/21/08

General Electric has been in the appliance business for decades, and the company knows how to produce refrigerators that are not only visually appealing, but very functional and competitively priced as well. The Profile PFSS5NJWSS bottom-freezer refrigerator is a case in point.

The PFSS5NJWSS has an impressive overall feel, with a large 25.1 cubic feet of interior space and a three-door, bottom-freezer design. This is a commanding fridge in both stature and functionality, with ample room to handle the storage needs of even the largest family. The construction is sturdy, and the contoured doors give the fridge a sleek look.

A noteworthy feature on the PFSS5NJWSS is its external water dispenser that delivers cool and clear filtered water through a door dispenser. While this is common in side-by-side refrigerators, it is more rare in bottom-freezer models. Surprisingly, the water-dispenser equipment is contained entirely within the door, so it doesn't reduce the interior door storage space. On the outside, the dispenser is only about 1-1/2 inches deep, or just deep enough to slide a glass underneath to fill with water.

Thanks to this innovative design, the PFSS5NJWSS offers a large amount of door storage. On the right door are two deep clear-front pick-off bins, plus a dairy keeper and can rack that can hold up to four cans. The left door is home to two more clear-front pick-off bins, as well as a fixed shallow-depth shelf.

The PFSS5NJWSS's refrigerator compartment has four half-width glass shelves that are adjustable for height, and they all have spill-saver lips to prevent drips and spills from spreading to other shelves. One of the shelves has a space-saver feature where the front half of the shelf conveniently slides under the back half, which frees up vertical storage for taller items. We also appreciate the extra-large full-width deli/snack drawer, which has a clear top that pops up and out of the way when the drawer is opened. A pair of humidity-controlled crispers rounds out the interior storage space.

The PFSS5NJWSS has a well-designed freezer that opens like a drawer. It has three pull-out white-wire baskets, including one split-width and two full-width. The baskets each have panels to make them feel more like drawers than just baskets. A factory-installed icemaker is also included in the freezer, and it has a covered ice bucket to keep the ice clean and fresh.

We reviewed the stainless-steel model, but this big fridge is also available in white, bisque and black. For a solidly built bottom-freezer refrigerator with a French-door configuration and ample storage space, the GE Profile PFSS5NJWSS is an excellent choice.

Pros: Solid construction, lots of storage space, properly illuminated, through-the-door filtered water dispenser
Cons: Lacks extras like egg and bottle caddies

Warranty
1 year, parts and labor; 5 years, sealed system
