General Electric Profile PDW7900N built-in dishwasher
Date Published: 4/25/08
If you're looking for a dishwasher with a larger-than-average capacity, the GE Profile PDW7900N certainly fits the bill. It can hold up to 16 place settings, making it roomier than more expensive models we've tested. Plus, it has an adjustable top rack and adjustable bottom rack to accommodate oversized or odd-shaped items. The "adjustable" feature comes into play when the rack tines are folded. The bottom rack in particular is quite versatile; all of the tines fold flat. Even the standard cutlery tray is adjustable and can be moved to various locations within the dishwasher's interior.
This GE Profile model also did an adequate job of cleaning everything we packed into it. Because it has a built-in food disposal, we didn't manually rinse the dishware before we placed it into the dishwasher. And we were pleased with the results -- the food disposal was effective. It prevented food particles from being redeposited on dishware during the wash cycle. This model has three full-size wash arms and six spray levels, which seemed to make a difference. An internal heater creates temperatures up to 160 degrees Fahrenheit and an internal water filtration system allows the dishwasher to use filtered water. The result? Everything -- from plates to glassware -- came out clean.
Our only complaints: The GE Profile PDW7900N lacks a stainless steel tub insert, opting for a plastic version instead. The top rack, although adjustable, isn't removable. We found it necessary to towel off a few items that harbored water droplets, despite the GE Profile's heated drying cycle. Still, this didn't really temper our enthusiasm for its performance.
The GE Profile PDW7900N has seven wash cycles, including a high temperature wash, an NSF-certified rinse to fight germs and bacteria, a quick-wash setting and a delicate setting for crystal and china. The model we tested is the stainless steel version and costs about $100 more than models with a colored exterior. This model also comes in black, bisque or white.
The stainless steel model has an exterior control panel atop the front that is trimmed in black. The controls are pushbutton and there is a child-lock to prevent unwanted changes. Overall, the GE Profile PDW7900N is a solid performer and its stainless steel exterior lends a luxury appeal.
Pros: Food disposal, adjustable racks, large capacity
Cons: Can't remove top rack
