General Electric Profile JE1160 Microwave Oven

Date Published: 6/27/07

One of the least expensive sensor-equipped microwave ovens you're likely to find, General Electric's Profile JE1160 uses this advanced technology in a somewhat more limited way than is typical. While most sensor microwaves offer sensor-controlled cooking for numerous food categories, this less expensive model offers it for only three of its programs -- popcorn, beverages and reheating.

If these are the most common tasks for which you will be using your microwave oven, this lower cost model makes perfect sense, especially since a sensor is the most accurate type of programmed feature a microwave oven can offer. If, on the other hand, your typical microwave repertoire includes preparing fresh vegetables, baked potatoes, seafood and bacon, you might be better served by a microwave with a more all-inclusive sensor.

As you look at the JE1160 you may be puzzled by the difference between instant-on programs and sensor-controlled programs. Instant-on programs are certainly convenient, but they do not use a sensor in their operation. Instead, these keys rely on simple preset blocks of cooking time -- usually on high power. Sensors use more sophisticated technology that measures moisture in foods, varies power levels automatically and shuts off the oven only when cooking is complete. The GE JE1160 offers a selection of both sensor-controlled and instant-on features.

In addition to these automated features, the JE1160 offers two types of defrosting -- automatic and manual. The automatic defrost program works well and for this reason we suggest using it to get the best possible results. Manual defrost should be used as a backup when no preset program seems just right.

Overall, we find this model to be an excellent buy in this category. GE's JE1160 is priced right and has more to offer than many microwave ovens of this size.

Pros: Offers a sensor, excellent defrost system
Cons: Sensor for just three food categories

Warranty
1 year, full; 5 year, magnetron tube
