General Electric PGS908 slide-in gas range
Date Published: 9/3/08
The General Electric PGS908 slide-in gas range is an eye-catching model. Regardless of the color you choose -- black, white, bisque or stainless steel, this model comes with a four-burner gas cooktop. The highlight of the top is the 15,000-Btu power boil burner. If offers some of the most intense heat of any gas model in this price range. Use it for stir-frying, searing and super-quick boils.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the precise simmer burner allows you to hold a simmer as low as 140 degrees Fahrenheit or to heat up an intense flame with up to 5,000 Btu. With this much versatility on one cooking surface, you should have no problem finding a flame that is just right for the dish you're creating.
Packed with the features we'd expect of a range at this price, the PGS908 lacks only the more costly convection oven. In spite of this lack, baking results are quite satisfactory. Useful features include self cleaning for various time periods and an automatic shut-off. We like the fact that all broiling with the PGS908 is done right in the main oven. This leaves a handy storage drawer below the oven for all the extra cooking odds and ends you need to store.
More expensive models may offer additional minor features, but there's nothing essential lacking on this GE range. That's why we feel very comfortable recommending the GE PGS908 for those whose budgets fall in this range.
Pros: Attractive stainless slide-in with a versatile range of gas outputs and broil-in main oven, sealed burners
Cons: Lacks the high gas outputs found on some of more expensive ranges
