General Electric JVM1540 over-the-range microwave oven
Date Published: 1/16/08
An incredibly good buy, General Electric's JVM1540 is a reliable over-the-range microwave oven with all the standard equipment. This 30-inch model includes a turntable that promotes even heating, various convenience settings, 10 power levels and two types of defrost. Equipped with its' own ventilation system, the JVM1540 also replaces an overhead hood and can be used in both vented and non-vented installations. The fan has two speeds with a draw of 300 CFM, which is typical of units of this type.
We like the fact that this model offers an easy-to-read, variable-speed scrolling display. This display offers visual prompts that are helpful for guiding new users through unfamiliar cooking and reheating programs. Although the included lighting for the cooking surface is not halogen, it is bright and useful. Even better is the low lighting provided by the nightlight setting. This convenient light provides a soft glow in the kitchen long after the day's cooking is done.
What we miss on the JVM1540 is General Electric's incredibly accurate sensor system. Instead, this model offers a collection of convenience settings and instant-on keys. The keys are helpful enough, but don't produce the accurate results of the far more precise sensor option. To get General Electric's terrific sensor, you'll have to step up to one of their more expensive models.
With an average-size capacity, the JVM1540 offers a sufficient 1.5-cubic-foot interior. The accessory rack adds to the capacity, but as is the case in all microwaves, the cooking time is increased as more foods are added to the oven.
Popular with shoppers for its reasonable price, solid reputation and reliable performance, this over-the-range unit comes in black, white, bisque and stainless steel, and is the most affordable of all General Electric models in this category. We can't think of a better over-the-range model in the under $250 range than our highly recommended General Electric JVM1540.
Pros: Outstanding value in this price range, attractive, with scrolling display and pre-set convenience features, available in all current colors including stainless
Cons: Lacks General Electric's outstanding sensor feature
