General Electric JS998SKSS slide-in range

Date Published: 7/9/08

Cooking with speed is the name of the game with General Electric's JS998SKSS range with Trivection technology; its oven combines standard heat, convection and microwave energy for some of the fastest baking, roasting and broiling you'll find.

You'll be cooking up to five times faster than normal in this range's oven; a 22-pound turkey, for example, can be prepared in just 2 hours. Other foods that benefit from this combination of methods are those that are normally baked or broiled. The longer the food normally takes to cook, the greater the amount of time that you save; expect to save a lot of time when it comes to preparing large roasts, for example, but don't be surprised when there is little or no difference in the time it takes to prepare quick-baking foods like cookies.

Despite all the benefits of this oven, it's worth mentioning that although it includes microwave energy in its bake mode, it does not operate as a microwave oven. For your usual microwavable favorites, you'll still require a separate microwave oven in your kitchen.

The JS998SKSS's surface elements are quite versatile, but not dramatically different from those found on most other top-of-the-line ranges. There are four electric elements, one of which can be adjusted to two sizes. Unlike some ranges in this price range, the JS998SKSS doesn't offer a warming zone or more than one adjustable element.

The controls on this GE model are a combination of knobs and sophisticated electronics. The oven is self-cleaning and offers a bread-proofing mode. We especially like the addition of bright halogen lighting to the interior.

Though it is available in a beautiful stainless finish from many retailers, GE also manufacturers a limited number of these ranges in bisque.

If you enjoy cooking but want to do it faster, GE's JS998SKSS with Trivection technology might just be the range for you.

Pros: Fast convection cooking
Cons: Cooktop is fairly basic, Time savings are dramatic only with longer-cooking foods

Warranty
1 year, parts and labor; 5 years, cooktop and magnetron tube
