General Electric JGRP20 24-inch built-in gas oven

Date Published: 3/21/08

Upgrade your old 24-inch gas wall oven with the JGRP20, General Electric's self-cleaning model with electronic controls and a floating glass door. An ideal choice for a small 24-inch oven cutout, this model is unlikely to require too much alteration to existing cabinets. Just make sure to check your measurements carefully to ensure that your cabinet will accommodate a 38-3/8-inch high oven.

Available in two neutral colors, black or white, the General Electric JGRP20 is one of just a few gas wall ovens of this size that offers the convenience of a self-cleaning cycle. It may cost a good deal more than a manual-clean model, but if your life is a busy one, then the convenience of this feature is well worth it. In addition to the time saved from the self-clean mode, you will also be so glad you don't have to breathe noxious fumes of oven cleaner.

With fairly simple features, the JGRP20 offers basic, dependable baking, roasting and broiling. Unlike some gas ovens, baking, roasting and broiling are all done in the main oven. Instead of a broiler, the lower drawer offers convenient storage.

This oven has electronic controls with a digital display. As far as today's electronic controls go, these are very simple, but they may still pose a challenge for those accustomed to older-style, dial oven controls. If this is the case for you, you may want to allow enough time to thoroughly read the manual and learn to use the new controls before inviting the whole family to dinner.

The JGRP20 offers both an interior oven light and an audible preheat signal. A small viewing window allows you to see how foods are progressing and eliminates the need to open the door to test foods until absolutely necessary. The digital readout offers a kitchen timer and displays the oven temperature. An especially good choice for the forgetful, this model comes equipped with an auto-shutoff. For those who require the oven to remain on for a longer period of time, an override control allows you to circumvent this safety feature.

Recommended for its convenient and easy-to-use self-cleaning cycle, General Electric's JGRP20 comes with a modern and attractive floating glass door.

Pros: Self-cleaning cycle, in-oven broiling, pilotless ignition, viewing window, electronic controls, storage drawer
Cons: Not recommended for use with propane, offers fewer features than larger gas ovens
