General Electric JES735 compact microwave
Date Published: 2/19/07
We favor the General Electric JES735 compact microwave oven based on the company's reputation for quality products and service. Plenty of cheaper microwave ovens are available, but many are not nearly as reliable as this countertop model. We also like the fact that GE has a large service network should you encounter a problem with this product.
Unlike most GE appliances, this compact microwave has limited distribution. At this writing, it is available only online and at a handful of big box stores. As independent dealers concentrate more on larger appliances, sales of smaller products such as this one have moved to the mass merchants.
Available in black or white, the JES735 has fairly basic features -- exactly what you would expect on a unit of this size. The interior measures 0.7 cubic feet, spacious enough for simple reheating, but not large enough for cooking for more than 1-2 people. With 700 watts of power and 10 power levels, this model can handle any common microwaving task from reheating to cooking and defrosting. In addition, five convenience programs are included for preparing baked potatoes, popcorn, pizza, food plates and hot beverages. What this model lacks is an automated defrost program. All defrosting must be done by entering your own defrost times. The disadvantage of this is longer defrosting times and the likelihood of foods cooking at the edges before they are completely thawed.
Equipped with an LC display, this microwave has touch controls and a digital timer and clock. Perfect for an apartment, office, wet bar or dorm, GE's JES735 is an excellent value and backed by a solid reputation. Only those who require reliable defrosting may wish to reconsider
Pros: Reliable
Cons: Not likely to be the least expensive product on the shelf, lacks a programmed defrost
