One of the largest countertop microwave ovens available, the main attraction of the 2.2-cubic-foot General Electric JES2251 is its spaciousness. With such a large cavity and a full 1200 watts of microwave energy, this model is big enough and powerful enough to heat large quantities of food -- quickly. A good choice for a growing family, this unit can easily handle the large dishes and sizeable casserole pans needed to feed a crowd.

The most outstanding feature of this microwave oven, beyond sheer size and speed, is its sensor. The sensor on this model is designed primarily for reheating tasks. Reheating plates of leftovers, snack foods and a simple hot breakfast are made easy thanks to this simple-to-use feature.

What the JES2251 doesn't offer is a sensor that's as useful for cooking as it is reheating. Although you can certainly cook foods in this oven, the automated sensor won't be of much help. You will need to program your cooking times manually. An oven with more sensor categories would be useful for preparing foods beyond leftovers, such as bacon, seafood, baked potatoes and other foods from a raw state. Simply put, the sensor features of the JES2251 are not very useful beyond simple reheating.

GE generally offers very well-engineered touchpad controls and those included on the JES2251 are no exception. This touchpad control includes many advanced features that you won't find on other microwave ovens. A melt mode, multiple program capabilities, word prompts and adjustments for volume, speed and display are all included. Use these controls to customize the look and sound of your oven. You can choose to turn off the volume or eliminate an annoying lighted display.

We think the JES2251, with its vast space, speed and reheating capabilities, would make a great built-in unit, but unfortunately no kit for this purpose is offered. If you plan to take advantage of GE's JES2251, you will need a good amount of space to accommodate its sizeable girth.
