General Electric JES1139 Microwave Oven

Date Published: 6/27/07

Since it is reasonably priced and backed by a reliable service network, we like the 1.1-cubic-foot General Electric JES1139 for how it performs its basic microwaving tasks, such as reheating, defrosting and simple cooking. A convenient kitchen tool, this microwave is small enough for most countertops and also works well on a shelf or cart.

The General Electric JES1139 has mid-range features. Equipped with automated defrost, it uses programming settings to ensure slow, gentle thawing and minimal pre-cooking of food edges. A number of convenience settings are included and work fairly well for cooking and reheating commonly prepared foods. There are one-touch keys for preset reheating of a number of foods -- but just for those relying solely on high power. The only better performing automated program -- found on other models but not this one -- is one controlled by a sensor, which varies the power levels and adjusts the heat automatically for differing food quantities.

The JES1139 heats quite evenly thanks to a turntable. This turntable ensures foods receive plenty of exposure to the microwaves as they rotate through them, and 1100 watts of microwave energy make for quick cooking results. With many recipes and package instructions, you will want to select the shortest recommended cooking times in order to prevent overcooking.

Parents of small children may find the child lockout feature to be beneficial. With this feature, accidental operation of the oven can be prevented.

A medium-sized microwave oven of good quality, GE's JES1139 comes in black or white and makes a good choice for those shopping for a lightweight, reliable product that can move with them.

Pros: Offers automated defrost, turntable, fast-cooking high wattage and some basic convenience features
Cons: Lacks a sensor
