General Electric DCVH660EH / DCVH660GH dryer
Date Published: 6/24/08
General Electric's DCVH660EH (electric)/ DCVH660GH (gas) dryer is one-half of this manufacturer's matched, front-loading laundry pair -- the half that can potentially save you hundreds of dollars over the top-selling brands. How General Electric manages to do this is actually quite simple. The DCVH660EH/GH offers a less sophisticated and less expensive control panel. The heating cycles themselves are similar to those on models costing far more, but the controls are rotary and pushbutton instead of touch controls.
This unit, like the other selections with this newer design, offers the features that have made this style of dryer such a hit. The capacity is incredibly large -- a full 7.0 cubic feet; so large in fact, that no previous class of dryer has ever been able to tackle this much laundry at one time.
The other feature we look for, a moisture sensor, is included here as well. This feature adjusts the heat to dry clothing, but without the shrinkage and damage to clothes that is common among thermostatically controlled dryers. We feel strongly that this feature is a must-have for any high-quality dryer in the over $500 price range.
Still other features of the big-boys are found on the DCVH660EH/GH. In our opinion these are not as important as the capacity and sensor, but nonetheless General Electric has included these useful components on a budget-priced model. They include five heat selections, numerous cycles, a damp-dry option and more/less controls. Should all these settings not meet your needs, an additional custom cycle of your own making can be programmed into the dryer control's memory.
In spite of the fact that the controls are a bit simpler than some, this dryer offers LED indicators that keep you informed of the cycles in progress. A countdown timer is also onboard, tracking the time remaining until your load completes. Last, but not least, the DCVH660EH/GH offers an extended tumble that keeps laundry moving and prevents wrinkles until unloading time.
Offered in a number of colors, this dryer can be elevated on an optional pedestal, installed side-by-side with a washer or stacked. With many features of the more expensive models, General Electric's DCVH660EH/GH uses a less expensive control panel that allows you to join the trend of new-style laundry products at a budget price.
Pros: Higher in height and easier on the back when used without pedestal, huge capacity, damage-preventing moisture sensor, budget priced
Cons: Less sophisticated control panel
