General Electric CGS980 freestanding gas range
Date Published: 7/23/08
Rather than adhere to the trend of offering a warmer in the area of a range that has traditionally been occupied by a storage drawer, General Electric has chosen to include a complete, fully featured second oven that is located below the primary oven of its CGS980 freestanding gas range. This addition allows you to bake rolls, side dishes or desserts as your main dish cooks in the primary oven. And for those occasions when full baking isn't required, the secondary oven also functions as a regular warming drawer. We love its versatility and convenience.
Almost as impressive as the extra oven is the addition of five stacked gas burners to the range's surface. These burners add versatility to the stovetop and encourage superior cooking control at both low and high temperatures, with both small and large pans. To top it all off, this range offers one of the fiercest power boil burners around; it belts out up to 18,000 Btu of cooking power, so you can substantially cut the amount of time you spend waiting for water to boil with this fire-breathing beast.
The ability of two of the CGS980's burners to hold a very low flame is an important factor in proper simmering, especially when dealing with tricky-to-prepare sauces. The range's two lowest simmer settings are 140 degrees Fahrenheit and 160 degrees F, respectively.
Although the CGS980 offers well thought-out extras, it doesn't forgo any of the typical features that you'd expect to find in a range at this price. The primary oven is a true convection device with a conversion setting and a temperature probe for roasts. A variable self-cleaning feature clears out gunk and grime easily and in the least possible amount of time.
The CGS980's heavy, commercially influenced design, combined with its modern, advanced residential features, make it an excellent choice for any kitchen where cooking really matters.
