General Electric 36-Inch Clean-Design Electric Cooktop JP980
Date Published: 7/21/08
Electric cooktops don't get much better than General Electric's 36-inch JP980. Although it can sometimes be difficult to control, overall, GE has designed an innovative five-element cooktop that meets the challenges of cooking with electricity.
Precise controls are used to deliver accurate heating and initiate temperature changes. A pair of dual elements allows you to match your pan size to the element diameter. Unlike many dual-element cooktops, the JP980 also sports pan sensors that automatically set the elements to the optimal size, and they turn off the heat if you remove a pan but forget to cut the power. Each element is also equipped with an "on" indicator light and an accident-preventing hot-surface indicator.
The JP980's electronic controls operate by simple finger touches. Since they are embedded in the glass, they don't require any special care or cleaning. Simply wipe the smooth glass surface clean with soapy water or a spray cleaner. Burned-on food presents a bigger challenge, but if you soak such deposits first, you won't need to resort to surface-scratching abrasives.
Available in black, white, bisque and black with stainless trim, the General Electric JP980 boasts a sleek design and makes an excellent choice for an architecturally modern kitchen.
Pros: Five elements include two with automated dual capabilities, electronic finger-touch controls, easy to clean, sleek design, many safety features
Cons: Expensive, electric elements don't offer the quick reaction time of gas
