General Electric 30-Inch Built-In Advantium Microwave SCB2000
Date Published: 6/27/06
The newest members of the convection microwave oven family are speed-cook models like the General Electric 30-Inch Built-In Advantium Microwave SCB2000. This model combines microwave technology with the added browning power of halogen light for traditional oven-quality results at lightening speeds. The biggest advantage of this model is the time savings gained in the preparation of slow cooking foods such as roasts and turkeys. Baking also gets a nice time boost, but it is not nearly as dramatic as the savings noted during roasting. And while the most notable benefit is in baking and roasting, this model still does a good job with the commonplace daily tasks of reheating and defrosting.
The controls on SCB2000 are all electronic and easy to operate. Gone is the cumbersome knob found on the original Advantium model. This model measures almost 30 inches across and makes an excellent choice for installation alone or above a 30-inch wall oven. Like the wall oven, this speed cook convection-microwave requires 240-volt power. In addition to 240-volt power, some patience and willingness to experiment is recommended. Foods cook a bit differently in this oven, so you'll need to be prepared to make some changes in the way you prepare many of your favorites.
Depending on what you choose to cook, you'll also need to be prepared to shuffle about various included pans. Your patience, however, will be rewarded with fast results that will encourage you to tackle foods you may commonly avoid. Should you find the price tag too high to justify experimentation, consider a traditional convection-microwave oven for comparable results at a lower price.
