General Electric 1.8 Cu. Ft. Profile Microwave JEB1860SMSS

A smart mix of features and convenience, GE's 1.8 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwave Oven JEB1860SMSS will maximize your microwave cooking options. Sophisticated sensor programming tops the list of exceptional offerings from the JEB1860SMSS. This unit has one-touch buttons for all the usual items (popcorn, baked potato, reheat, and beverage) and does an exceptional job with these tasks. Two additional sensor functions -- chicken/fish and vegetable -- offer multiple options if the button is pressed two or three times in succession. The sensor worked extremely well gauging the optimum cooking time to deliver foods that were cooked throughout but not overdone.
We found that the most important condition for obtaining excellent results is following the stated instructions for using a vented covering on the dish and allowing a few minutes of "sitting" or rest time after cooking has completed. The rest time allows the heat to equalize so the food can finish cooking. There are many ways to customize cooking with this unit, including changing the power level, setting a dual stage cooking cycle or adding time to an existing function with the Add 30 Sec button. We especially liked the ease and convenience of using the Express Cook buttons (touchpad numbers 1-6), which begin a cycle automatically for the stated number of minutes.
The instruction booklet for this model does an adequate job describing the various functions and giving tips and guidance for using them. This unit also has a handy reference guide printed on the top inside panel, with quick tips for each of the sensor functions. Even individuals with little to no microwave cooking experience will find this model easy to use. The touchpad controls are user friendly and the digital display provides instructions when additional information is required (e.g., the weight of the food being cooked).
This unit is styled in black with stainless steel front trim and is fairly large for a countertop model. If you don't want to relinquish that much counter space, you can purchase an optional trim kit to install this oven as a built-in. The turntable measures just over 14 inches and can accommodate square, round or oblong casserole dishes with no trouble. The jumbo-sized interior handles family-size tasks. It can fit a 6-pound turkey breast, a full head of cauliflower, a large 13-inch pizza stone and more.
The defrost function on this unit also exceeded our expectations. The smart sensor adjusts for the weight of the food and the digital display provides instructions when it's time to turn or separate food pieces for optimum results. A traditional timed defrost cycle is available as well.
For basic microwaving, you can't beat the ease and convenience of the GE JEB1860SMSS. In addition to the black and stainless steel model, this unit also is available with white, bisque or all black finishes for about $40 less.
Pros: Six automatic sensor buttons, six Express Cook buttons, two-stage cooking, built-in option
