GE Profile PEB1590SMSS Countertop Convection Microwave
Date Published: 6/2/08
The GE Profile PEB1590SMSS Countertop Convection Microwave has a number of smart features that make it an appealing option for new homeowners or those looking to upgrade from a basic microwave oven. This countertop model is on the large side, requiring a bit more space then compact models. Yet, we think you'll agree that its 1.5-cubic-foot capacity and wide range of cooking and heating options make it an exceptional choice.
Its all black exterior is accented by two strips of stainless steel trim on the front panel. The GE Profile microwave is also available in solid back, bisque or white. Pushbutton controls let you quickly choose the appropriate cooking option: Convection, Time Cook, Microwave, Combination, Defrost or Express. There are also four Sensor Cook options, including Popcorn, Reheat, Beverage and Cook. The unit has a digital display panel that offers helpful instructions and displays information such as the cooking time and temperature.
We were amazed at how evenly this unit baked. We made oatmeal cookies using the convection cooking option. We also prepared a traditional cheese pizza using fresh dough made from scratch. The results were as good, if not better than foods prepared in a traditional oven, and cooked even slightly faster thanks to the unit's convection function, which circulates heated air throughout the oven.
One of this unit's best features is its combination mode, which utilizes both microwave energy and convection power to cook food faster and with greater precision. Foods cooked at this setting are typically done in about half the time it would take in a regular oven. Plus, you retain full browning and crisping capability -- something you simply can't get from a basic microwave oven.
We also loved the unit's Sensor feature, which measures the humidity level in the oven and automatically adjusts cooking time. This function is ideal for making microwave popcorn, baking potatoes, reheating coffee or other beverages, or simply reheating foods. The best part is you don't have to guess at the amount of cooking time needed. The oven makes that determination for you.
One feature that took a bit of getting used to was the time/temperature control dial. The knob acts as a multipurpose selector, letting you specify cooking time, temperature, power level and food type (for sensor cooking). While we appreciate the versatility, we had to reference the instruction manual several times to understand the full capabilities activated by the control dial.
In terms of microwave performance, the GE Profile delivers all of the features you'd expect -- and more. You get 10 power levels for timed microwave cooking; an Express Cook button to jump-start cooking in 30 second increments; Manual and Automatic Defrost options; and Sensor cooking capabilities, with buttons for Popcorn, Reheat, Beverage and Cook. The interior of the oven is large enough to accommodate round, square or rectangular pans up to 14 inches in diameter. We especially loved being able to use the turntable/rack with the oversized pizza pan.
If you are looking for a versatile countertop unit, and have the space, the GE Profile is a great choice. Its many features and large capacity make it well suited to family meal preparation as either a primary or supplemental oven. In addition to the detailed instruction booklet, this unit also comes with a beautiful 142-page full-color microwave convection cookbook chock full of recipes to get you started. You can purchase an optional trim kit that enables you to install the oven under a cabinet, in a wall or above a stovetop.
