General Electric Profile JVM1790 Over-the-Range Convection Microwave
Date Published: 2/19/07
One of two over-the-range convection microwave ovens offered by General Electric, the JVM1790 differs from the slightly less expensive model in capacity and design. This model, the larger of the two, has a capacity of 1.7 cubic feet, versus model JVM1490's smaller 1.4-cubic-foot Spacemaker design. In reality, it's unlikely this small difference in size will be a factor when it comes to using various sizes of cookware. Since both models will perform similarly, we recommend using price and styling preference to choose between the two.
The second major difference between these two models is styling. The newer of the two models, the JVM1790, has somewhat softer lines and uses a dial as well as electronic touch controls. The JVM1790 also has the added benefit of Auto Recipe conversion setting. This setting allows you to effortlessly convert your recipes to convection without calculating time or temperature variations.
By far, the most interesting feature of the General Electric JVM1790 is combination cooking. This setting allows you to combine the heat of convection with the speed of microwaving to achieve beautifully roasted and baked foods in 1/2 to 2/3 of conventional cooking time. The foods you prepare are sure to come out brown, crisp and succulent.
An excellent microwave as well as a convection oven, this model offers a highly accurate sensor. This quality sensor cooks a variety of foods and prevents the overcooking and undercooking common with less sophisticated automated programs.
Also included on the JVM1790 are a three-speed exhaust fan and two-level lighting for over the stovetop. Filler kits are available for integrating this model with a built-in look. Optional charcoal filters are available for installations where outside ventilation will not be used.
One of the finest over-the-range convection microwaves available, GE's JVM1790 is available in white, black, bisque or stainless steel.
Pros: Offers convection conversion, large interior, excellent microwave and combination programs
Cons: Lighter in weight than previous models, indicative of less expensive components
