The Garmin StreetPilot c550 adds some useful features to a solid GPS system, creating an entertaining and functional navigation unit. While somewhat expensive, the portable c550 works very well in most situations.

This WAAS-enabled GPS receiver comes preloaded with Garmin's City Navigator NT software, with detailed maps of North America and nearly 6 million points of interest. You can even add custom points of interest, such as a relative's house or a school speed zone. Routes are calculated fairly quickly, although it can sometimes take the c550 several minutes to relocate your position if the signal is temporarily lost. The voice-guidance system includes text-to-speech functionality, so the c550 announces actual street names instead of the generic "turn left here" commentary common to lesser models.

Unlike the lower-end c530, the c550 includes an FM Traffic Message Channel (TMC) receiver, which enables the unit to receive real-time traffic updates. If a traffic jam or other obstacle appears on your plotted course, the c550 alerts you to the delay and gives you the option of calculating an alternate course around the trouble spot. Keep in mind that this service requires a subscription, and it is not available in all areas.

The c550 has a bright 2-4/5-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 320X240. The display is newly designed with a special glass that is easier to read in bright sunlight. With a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, you can use the touchscreen to dial out and answer phone calls, and the c550's built-in microphone and pair of speakers allow you to converse hands-free.

The c550 has a memory card expansion slot, and you can use that to play MP3 digital audio files saved to SD card. The unit will mute the music when announcing a voice-guidance instruction. The internal rechargeable battery is rated at 8 hours, so the c550 can even serve as a portable music player. However, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired.

The long feature list is completed by a theft-deterrent system that prevents the system from operating without a four-digit PIN number. The Garmin StreetPilot c550 navigation system provides accurate and effective guidance, and the added traffic alert and Bluetooth features go a long way to justify the price.
