Garmin StreetPilot c530 GPS System
Date Published: 11/14/06
The Garmin StreetPilot c530 is a competent GPS system that performs its job well but does not overwhelm you with flashy features like an audio player or photo viewer. However, don't think the c530 is a stripped-down model, because that certainly is not the case.
Unlike previous StreetPilot models, the c530 is fully portable for navigation outside the car. The integrated rechargeable battery provides up to 8 hours of use, so in addition to moving the c530 from car to car, you can easily take it with you on hikes and other non-vehicle expeditions.
The c530 has a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, and the built-in antenna provides better-than-expected reception, even on city streets. Entering starting and ending destinations is a simple task, and the c530 calculates routes at a respectable clip. The c530 comes preloaded with Garmin's City Navigator NT, with maps for North America that include approximately 6 million points of interest (POI). You can even add your own custom POI.
The c530 offers turn-by-turn voice guidance, but it lacks the text-to-speech (TTS) functionality that tells you specific street names. Maps looks great on the 2-4/5-inch touchscreen display, which has a resolution of 320X240 and a special glass that is easy to read in bright sunlight. Maps can be displayed in 2-D or 3-D.
This navigation system is compatible with to-the-minute traffic services that can alert you to traffic jams and other delays on your plotted course and reroute you around problem areas. However, to enable this function, you will need to purchase the optional FM TMC traffic receiver (Garmin model GTM 20, MSRP $214.27) and subscribe to the service, significantly adding to the initial cost of the c530.
One very welcome feature is the c530's antitheft system. To discourage theft, you can set the unit to require a special personal identification number when powered on, or you can program it to only start working at a certain location. The c530 has an SD memory card for expansion, and a USB port lets you download updates or add optional features such as a Travel Guide.
By focusing on navigation and eschewing more extravagant features and multimedia compatibility, Garmin's StreetPilot c530 proves to be a solid GPS system.
Pros: Accurate and trouble-free GPS system without excessive features, good battery life
Cons: No text-to-speech voice guidance, traffic alert receiver is an expensive option
