Garmin iQue M4 GPS/PDA system
Date Published: 10/2/07
There are a number of PDA add-ons for incorporating GPS (Global Positioning System) capabilities into your PDA, but Garmin has gone the opposite direction with their iQue handheld series. These devices are GPS receivers first, with PDA capabilities built on top of them. This means the GPS features function quite well, but how do the PDA features stack up? Not too badly, especially in their M4 model.
The iQue M4 features a 312MHz Intel XScale processor and 64MB of RAM, so the core power and storage is respectable. The 3-1/2-inch TFT screen delivers crisp and bright images.
This PDA runs the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system, so it's a bit dated in terms of OS. However, it comes with Pocket versions of Outlook, Internet Explorer, Word and Excel, so you'll be able to take your documents with you on the road. Unfortunately, there are no wireless capabilities built-in, so if you want to browse the web with this M4, you'll have to add a separately available Wi-Fi card.
Luckily, Garmin has included an SD/SDIO slot for adding more memory or Secure Digital accessories, such as a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth card. The iQue M4 also offers MP3 playback and includes a microphone for voice recording.
If you're looking at this PDA, you're mostly going to be interested in the GPS side of things, and that's where the iQue M4 really shines. It comes preloaded with maps of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, so you never have to worry about downloading new maps for domestic directions. The iQue M4 features voice directions, so simply tell it where you want to go and it will tell you how to get there. In addition, Garmin has included a collection of useful extras such as a windshield mount and a car cradle.
The real kicker is the price. This PDA retails for $750, which is a hefty amount even for a combination PDA/GPS receiver. However, if you're looking for an excellent GPS device that also functions quite well as a PDA, and cost isn't much of an object, Garmin's iQue M4 is a great convergence device.
Pros: Excellent GPS capabilities, decent PDA performance
Cons: Very expensive, no wireless
