Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro digital camera

Date Published: 5/27/08

If you're buying an advanced, enthusiast-class digital camera, you know you're going to receive top-of-the-line performance. The little things can set these models apart, and the FinePix S5 from Fujifilm includes quite a few very good features that will yield outstanding image quality.

The FinePix S5 claims 12.34 megapixels of resolution, but because of the way the camera works, the realistic resolution is somewhere between 6.17 and 12.34 megapixels. The FinePix S5 uses two types of overlapping photodiodes -- a larger "S" photodiode and a smaller "R" photodiode. By using two types of photodiodes, the FinePix S5 creates extremely bright and sharp prints with very little noise, but its realistic resolution is lower than 12.34 megapixels. This technology especially makes this model effective in low light conditions that require high ISO sensitivities.

The FinePix S5 offers shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/8000th of a second, which is a great feature for shooting fast moving objects. Its response times are outstanding in all areas. You will find that the FinePix S5 is fairly easy to use, compared to other advanced digital cameras. Its menu structure makes sense, and it offers help screens to make it easier to use the function you want.

We liked the size and feel of this model. It's a large model, just like most enthusiast-class digital cameras, but the controls seemed to be easy to use. The FinePix S5's 2.5-inch LCD is sharp and bright in all lighting conditions, and it includes a magnification feature that allows you to immediately "zoom in" on faces while reviewing your shots to make sure everyone's eyes are open, for example. We would have preferred a larger LCD at this price point, though. Fujifilm also includes a few "film simulation" modes that help create extremely realistic skin tones in portraits.

One especially interesting feature with the FinePix S5 is its ability to simultaneously save JPEG and RAW files of a single image. With dual image sizes, you have more options for working with your photos. Fujifilm also changed the battery option with the FinePix S5, now offering a rechargeable battery pack with this model, rather than AA disposable batteries with its previous advanced model, the FinePix S3. An AA battery option is OK for point-and-shoot models, but for a big model like this, you'll appreciate the rechargeable battery.

The FinePix S5 in this review is the camera body only; you can purchase add-on lenses for this unit, which uses a Nikon F-mount. Its image quality is outstanding, among the best you'll find in an advanced digital camera. However, you must sacrifice having a resolution that's lower than advertised to receive the benefits of the overlapping photodiodes. Unless you need more than 9 or 10 megapixels -- and most photographers don't -- the trade-off for improved image quality and less noise is worthwhile.

As with most advanced, enthusiast-class digital cameras, the FinePix S5 is an expensive model -- and that's before you begin purchasing lenses and external flashes. However, the image quality with the FinePix S5 more than justifies the price. If you can take advantage of this digital camera's features and power, it's one of the best options available.

Pros: Outstanding image quality, excellent low-light performance, good shutter speeds, LCD magnification is handy, dual image file option
Cons: Add-ons can be expensive, realistic resolution is lower than advertised
