FujiFilm FinePix F10 digital camera

Date Published: 6/23/08

Quick response times are the calling card for the Fujifilm FinePix F10 digital camera. You won't miss many spontaneous photos with the family or the pets using the FinePix F10. The camera is ready to shoot its first photo a little more than 1 second after pressing the power button, and its shutter lag is only a tiny fraction of a second, even when you don't pre-focus the shot.

However, the FinePix F10's continuous-shot mode isn't quite as good as we'd like to see. It will capture three images in 1 second, but if you want more than three photos, the camera slows to one photo every 1-2 seconds. Shot-to-shot delays can range from 2 to 8 seconds, when using the flash.

The FinePix F10's 3X optical zoom lens yields high-quality photos that are sharp and colorful. The FinePix F10 has 6.3 megapixels of resolution, which will yield some large, high-quality prints up to 11x14 inches in size. One of the FinePix F10's best features is its ability to create high-quality photos in low-light situations, even without the flash. The FinePix F10 has a high-sensitivity capability, which gives good results in low light. Some cameras with high-sensitivity experience severe problems with stray noise in photos, but the FinePix F10 seems to avoid this problem pretty well. If you experience noise problems, you can manually lower the sensitivity.

One drawback is the FinePix F10 doesn't have a viewfinder, meaning you must use the LCD to frame your photos, which some people will find awkward. The LCD also goes blank a fraction of a second before the photo is taken when using the flash, which could cause you to miss a shot by inadvertently moving the camera. The good news is the LCD measures 2.5 inches; the bad news is it isn't quite as sharp as we'd like it to be--especially when it serves as the viewfinder. The FinePix F10's LCD does have a "gain up" feature, that helps make it easier to see in bright-light situations.

The FinePix F10 is a model that won't appeal to anyone but beginning photographers. It's a point-and-shoot camera that doesn't offer many manual-setting features.

Finally, the FinePix F10 doesn't offer any add-on features. It also runs only on a proprietary rechargeable battery, which means you may want to purchase a second battery to have on hand.

Pros: Very good response times, large LCD has "gain up" feature to aid brightness, high resolution, good photo quality in low-light situations
Cons: No viewfinder, LCD images could be sharper, only runs from proprietary battery
