The Fujifilm FinePix A400 digital camera ranks far down the list when it comes to powerful consumer-level models. However, the A400 is a great example of how far digital cameras have evolved in recent years: You had no chance of finding a 4.1-megapixel model for less than $200 -- let alone less than $120 -- a few years ago.

With 4.1 megapixels of resolution, you can create photo-quality prints up to 5x7 inches (and up to 8x10 inches when shot under perfect lighting conditions). The A400's resolution is below average when compared to most digital cameras currently on the market, but it will work well for day-to-day family snapshots.

Overall image quality for the A400 is good, at least when the lighting conditions are good. However, it struggles when the lighting is less than adequate as its built-in flash and auto-focus features don't perform well in low-light situations. On the plus side, you'll find a 3X optical zoom lens with the A400, and it works well. Most photos are sharp; we didn't notice a lot of "soft" photos, as often occurs with low-priced digital cameras.

Our tests showed that response times with the A400 were disappointing. You cannot shoot your first photo until about 4-5 seconds after pressing the power button. Shutter lag ranges from one-half second to 1.5 seconds in most instances. Shot-to-shot delays ranged from 3-10 seconds, and the A400 has no continuous-shot mode. With these types of response times, be prepared to miss a lot of spontaneous photos.

The LCD measures 1.8 inches and definitely could be sharper and brighter. This unit does include an optical viewfinder, which means you don't have to rely solely on the LCD for framing photos.

Finally, for those looking to save even more money with their digital camera choice, the A400 allows you to power the unit with two AA disposable batteries, which is an inexpensive option. Unfortunately, the A400 includes only 12MB of usable internal memory, which probably isn't enough for you to avoid the need to purchase a memory card in the near future.

The A400 is aimed at inexperienced photographers looking to begin using digital photography for as little money as possible, so you won't find top features here. But, if you're looking for a very basic camera that's pretty easy to use, it's impossible to argue with the A400's price.
