If you've seen so many new expensive dishwashers you're starting to think you can no longer purchase a reliable model for $300 or so -- think again. Basic, reliable and reasonably priced dishwashers like Fridaire's FDB1050RE are not a thing of the past. This one even adds a convenient delay timer.

The FDB1050RE does an effective job of dishwashing. It just lacks many of the expensive bells and whistles that recent technology has brought to the market place. You won't find it to be superbly quiet or loaded with little details like adjustable racks and fold-down tines. And it doesn't use a sensor to control your cycle -- just preset programs.

What Frigidaire's FDB1050RE does do is hold a lot. You can expect to fit in 14 or so place settings thanks to its updated, full-to-the-floor door and accompanying large tub. The FDB1050RE relies on a familiar control system of a few buttons and a knob -- easy and inexpensive to repair should a problem arise.

The technology is simple, but the FDB1050RE is not without settings that add to effective cleaning. Both a hi-temp wash and a hi-temp rinse are included. A hi-temp wash helps loosen baked-on soil. Use it when you have pots, pans and heavily soiled baking dishes in your load to give the cycle a hot water boost. Rely on the hi-temp rinse when you're concerned about bacteria. It's effective option for baby bottles and medicine cups. It also can be useful for leaving glassware spot-free.

The one thing we were not impressed with was the silver-finished FDB1050REM. It's an inexpensive attempt to mimic stainless steel and looks exactly that way -- like a cheap impersonator. Select instead from the better looking and familiar white, black, bisque models, or real stainless steel for an additional $40.

An affordable alternative, this dishwasher does an effective job of washing the dishes. Check out Frigidaire's FDB1050RE if the newest technology and quietest operation are less important to you than a fair price and clean dishes.
