Frigidaire PLGS389SBK slide-in gas range

Date Published: 9/3/08

Frigidaire's PLGS389SBK is one of the least expensive name-brand slide-in gas ranges to offer all the most popular bells and whistles. Equipped with a warming drawer, a convection oven, a variable broiler and a maximum output stovetop burner of 16,000 Btu, there is little if anything in the feature category that's been left out on this model.

Although all the features are there, corners have necessarily been cut in other areas in order to keep the price low. One way Frigidaire keeps the price down on the PLGS389SBK is by using only partial stainless steel on the exterior of the range. We laud this innovative decision, as the substitution of black steel for stainless doesn't affect cooking one bit. On the other hand, we're not as thrilled with Frigidaire's use of less expensive components that we believe affect day-to-day use. For example, the grates on the PLGS389SBK are flimsier and more difficult to clean than what we are accustomed to on some other convection ranges. True, these other ranges are also priced higher. Likewise, other internal parts and electronic components used in this model are of the less expensive and less durable variety. For this reason, we anticipate the life expectancy of this model to be a bit shorter than what we expect on some comparably featured, yet higher priced models.

When it comes to individual features, Frigidaire has packed plenty into this product. The warming drawer is very handy, and at 1.4 cubic feet, it's spacious enough to be useful for warming bread and keeping completed casseroles hot and ready until serving time. The convection feature definitely adds to overall oven performance, especially in terms of even baking and moist meat roasting. It's also easy to program thanks to an automated convection conversion setting.

If you're looking for a range to last more than 10 to 15 years or better, then this one may not be your model. If on the other hand, you don't mind replacing this unit in a decade or so and cost savings and features are your priority, you should find that Frigidaire's PLGS389SBK fits the bill just fine.

Pros: Loaded with the industry's hottest features, price is easy on the wallet
Cons: Projected life of this range is shorter than that of the pricier models
