Frigidaire FGB24T3EC 24-inch built-in gas oven

Date Published: 3/21/08

The Frigidaire FGB24T3EC 24-inch built-in gas oven provides more cooking space than many 24-inch models. The difference is in the full-size broiler.

In place of a broiling drawer, the FGB24T3EC offers a full-size lower broiling cavity. This added space will enable you to place larger items under the broiler than is possible in a typical drawer-type broiler. The full-size broiler is especially useful for browning and crisping the outer surfaces of foods that are initially cooked by another method. We liked this large broiler for melting and browning the cheese we placed atop our onion soup gratinee and for crisping the exterior of baked crab cakes.

Although it appears similar to one, this model is not a full-size double oven. The lower compartment offers only an upper broil element and comes equipped with just one rack specifically for broiling. Other oven tasks such as baking and roasting are done in the upper oven, where the usual two racks are provided.

If you're replacing an existing 24-inch oven with this one, you'll need to ensure that your cutout is large enough to accommodate it. Due to the larger lower oven, the overall height of the FGB24T3EC is greater than usual. Measure carefully and be prepared to cut the opening to a larger size if necessary.

The biggest disadvantage of this oven is its lack of a self-cleaning cycle. You'll save some money on the purchase, but the FGB24T3EC will require an occasional scrubbing with toxic oven cleaner or a suitable alternative. On the other hand, we can't help but like the beautiful and up-to-date stainless-steel door on this attractive model. It looks great and can quickly and easily perk-up a kitchen that needs a modernizing makeover.

The Frigidaire FGB24T3EC offers electronic controls with a digital clock and timer. The interior light is controlled by a manual switch on the control panel. Pilotless, electronic ignition ensures that the oven is always lit and ready to go.

Larger than most 24-inch models and visually appealing in stainless steel, the biggest lack of Frigidaire's FGB24T3EC is that missing self-clean cycle.

Pros: Full size broiler, stainless door, electronic controls
Cons: Lacks self-cleaning cycle
