Frigidaire 36-Inch Gas Range PLGF659EC
Date Published: 10/26/07
One of the least expensive choices among 36-inch stainless gas ranges is the PLGF659EC from Frigidaire. Impressive in size and appearance, this model offers basic user-friendly features and makes an ideal choice for the dramatic kitchen on a budget.
One of the best features of the PLGF659EC is its comprehensive selection of burners. At the upper end, this range sports a 16,000-Btu Power Plus burner that is ideal for quick boiling, searing and stir-frying. On the other end of the power spectrum is a 5,000-Btu burner that has a simmer setting at a controlled low of just 675 Btu. In between, you'll find 9,500-Btu, 12,000-Btu and 14,000-Btu burners. A range with such a variety can be difficult to find, especially in this price range.
Variable outputs are not the PLGF659EC's only benefits. Each burner is sealed for easy cleaning, so there are no drip pans to bother with and no spaces for boil-overs to collect. The grates atop these burners are on the lightweight side, but for a model in this price range, that is to be expected. On the plus side, the PLGF659EC's grates create a flat surface that makes it easy to move pots and pans around the stovetop.
The PLGF659EC's oven is a bit smaller than we expected. For such a large range, the oven is sized more like a 30-inch conventional model, and it oddly doesn't occupy the available 36 inches of the range. The oven also offers only basic features, such as electronic controls and a self-clean cycle. The broiler does have two heat settings, but that's about it.
Simple to use and dramatic in appearance, Frigidaire's PLGF659EC gives you a big stainless design at a relatively affordable price.
Pros: Impressive looks, wide variety of burner outputs, attractive price for a 36-inch model
Cons: Lightweight construction, not the most durable components, small oven has no higher-end features
