Fisher & Paykel Titan GC913SS gas cooktop

Date Published: 9/17/08

Maytag MGC5430BD A great choice for an open kitchen, Fisher & Paykel's 36-inch cooktop GC913SS keeps it sleek with this stainless steel model that rises just 5/8 inch above countertop height. Although this model is equipped with five fully powered gas burners in place of the common six, it offers far more than the expected gas output.

At the center of this high-powered unit is an unusually large "rapid" burner that operates at a maximum output of 20,000 Btu. In the world of cooktops, this is quite extraordinary. Such a large output has the potential to produce an incredibly high flame -- one which we found to be very useful for high heat tasks such as stir-frying and quick searing of meats. The remaining burners offer maximums of 8,200 Btu, 5,800 Btu and 3,000 Btu respectively, with an effective low output of 512 Btu for almost perfect simmers.

If you'd be fueling this cooktop with liquid propane (LP), somewhat lower outputs than those listed above can be expected, primarily with the larger burners. Although a bit lower, these reduced outputs shouldn't create a noticeable difference in cooking performance. In fact, the output of these burners when used with LP is so high, we would recommend it for installations where natural gas is not an option.

As we would expect with a cooktop in this price range, the burners are sealed for easy cleanup. The surface of the top is recessed and holds spillovers fairly well. The three grates are constructed of durable cast iron and have a porcelain finish that aids in cleaning them. Each grate fits snugly and contributes to a flat, continuous surface that's conducive to effortless moving of pans from burner to burner as you cook.

Especially enticing on this Fisher & Paykel model is its warranty. With 2 years of coverage for both parts and labor, this model offers double what is typical of products of this type. Apparently Fisher & Paykel has plenty of faith in the GC913SS, as we do.

Pros: Exceptionally high output "rapid" burner, excellent design for open floor plan and Euro-style kitchens
Cons: Slightly lower output when used with propane (LP) fuel, five burners instead of possible six

Warranty
2 years
