Fisher & Paykel's attractive 36-inch OR36LDBGX1 gas range is enticing for the value it provides in the increasingly crowded world of expensive cooking appliances.

This model is a well-appointed European-style range that is an affordable alternative to commercial-style cooking equipment. The OR36LDBGX1 offers a wide range of outputs from 1,000 to 16,000 Btu among its five burners. The larger burners are excellent for wok cooking, rapid boiling and quick searing, but while the 1,000-watt burner setting does a fairly good job of holding low temperatures, it cannot be expected to hold a low simmer like a burner than can be adjusted to below 500 Btu. Cleaning the surface of this model is a bit more challenging than some may prefer, as the burners are not completely sealed.

Although it billed as easy-to-clean, the oven in the OR36LDBGX1 does not offer a self-cleaning cycle; instead, the durable enamel interior must be wiped clean or cleaned with an oven cleaner. The oven does, however, feature a variety of sophisticated cooking modes that include convection, baking, defrosting and broiling. An unusual glass baking dish that withstands high heat is included with this range; this dish is heavy-duty yet attractive, and can be used for cooking as well as for serving.

The OR36LDBGX1's controls resemble the sleek knobs that have become very common in Europe. An electronic timer, clock and universal icons are used to program this range.

We recommend this model to those who are shopping for a large, impressive range, but who want to spend less than what these models usually command. In Fisher & Paykel's OR36LDBGX1, you'll get a first-rate performer with outstanding design, but you'll sacrifice a bit of cleaning convenience in the bargain.
