Fisher & Paykel Intuitive Eco-Smart Top-Loader IWL16
Date Published: 6/15/07
Fisher & Paykel's Intuitive Eco-Smart Top-Loader IWL16 offers all the highly acclaimed features of the basic model (GWL15) plus a few additional features -- some that are functional and some just for kicks.
The functional additions to this energy-efficient top-loader include an extra temperature option, an extra water level setting and an extra rinse option. All of the energy and water saving standards are the same with its efficient sister model. The higher projected energy usage (223 kWh) is due to anticipated use of the added settings and the electricity required to power them.
Although the IWL16 offers a few additional settings, the most noticeable difference is the intuitive control panel. This panel utilizes an LCD display to highlight settings and display the remaining cycle time. The IWL16 also offers a more extensive selection of delay settings. In place of three delay settings, this model offers 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1-8 hours and 12/14/16/18 hour options -- for a whopping total of 14 choices.
A "how dirty" selector allows you to automatically tailor cycles to the soil level in your laundry. Thirteen lifecycles further allow you to micromanage clothing care. For most of us, the five options of the less expensive model are sufficient. You will need to assess whether any of the step-up features are options you will actually use regularly. Of the choices, our experts found the most practical additional features to be the extended delay choices and the added temperature and rinse selections. Having an LCD display and more than five cycles was not considered a particularly important priority.
In terms of mechanics, the IWL16 offers the same reliable direct-drive motor as the GWL15. Three spin speeds provide either 300, 670 or 1000 rpm. Excellent water removal and machine durability were noted.
Fisher& Paykel's IWL16 offers many of the same benefits of the popular front-loaders -- but for less money. What it does not offer is an internal water heater. In most situations, this should not be a factor as this washer uses such a small amount of hot water. One potential concern is the lid on this washer. Unlike the familiar American top-loaders, Fisher & Paykel's IWL16 has a plastic lid that won't stand up to abuse.
Pros: Highly energy efficient with lots of temperature options and time delay choices
Cons: Display can be expensive to service, lid is plastic
