Fisher & Paykel Eco-Smart Top-Loader GWL15
Date Published: 10/16/08
Our current favorite, the Fisher & Paykel Eco-Smart GWL15 has the best energy efficiency for the price of any top-loading washer we've found. The energy efficiency of this model rivals many of the expensive front-loading machines, so if finding the best value for the money is your goal, don't pass this unit by.
We were impressed with washer's enormous capacity. The bountiful 3.7-cubic-foot stainless-steel interior just keeps on taking clothes. The manufacturer recommends filling it thoroughly -- so we did, saving lots of water per load with excellent cleaning results.
Unusual controls grace this model from New Zealand based Fisher & Paykel. Soft buttons control the pre-programmed cycles and start the machine with just three touches. Using these programmed settings ensures the most efficient usage of water, and it selects the temperature and cycle duration for you. In addition, altering these selections to meet your individual needs is also quite easy. Change the water temperature, add a soak or vary the water level by simply pushing additional soft-touch buttons.
The GWL15 lacks the sophisticated display of Fisher & Paykel's step-up model IWL16 and the wide range of delay-time settings. Adding these features will cost you an additional $200. We don't see the need for this potentially expensive-to-repair display, but if you require more delay settings than the 1, 3 or 9 hour options on this model, you should consider making this upgrade.
Like other high-efficiency washing machines, the GWL15 has the capability of some very high spin speeds. This model's maximum spin speed of 1000 rpm is highly effective for water removal and lessening subsequent time in the dryer.
Before opting for this model, there are a few basic differences of which you should be aware. First of all, the GWL15 will require adapting to a slightly different style of control panel. Second, the GWL15 has an unusual plastic lid that is less durable than the typical metal one. In most instances, this should not pose a problem, unless you choose to stand on your washer or use the lid for storage of heavy items. Lastly, the clearance required for this washer and its open lid are greater than the typical American top-loader. For this reason you will want to take some careful measurements to ensure the washer will open properly if placed under upper laundry cabinets.
Fairly new to the American market, Fisher & Paykel has developed a reputation for reliability and good service response. Moderately priced, spacious and reliable, Fisher & Paykel's extremely energy efficient top-loader GWL15 is an incredible value that puts the temperamental front-loaders to shame.
Pros: Top-load model that offers all the best features of the new front-loaders for less
