Finis SwiMP3

Date Published: 11/28/07

The Finis SwiMP3 (model 1.30.013) is an ultra-compact gadget that lets you listen to your favorite music underwater. This unit is a waterproof MP3 player that dispenses with traditional earphones, relying instead on patented bone-conduction technology to transfer sound vibrations through the cheekbone and into the inner ear. The result is an incredible audio experience for anyone who loves to swim.

We tested the SwiMP3 version 2, which has expanded storage over version 1. Version 2 can hold up to 256MB or about 60 songs. The SwiMP3 is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, and it plugs directly into a computer's USB port via a connector located on the headset wire. The SwiMP3 recharges its internal batteries through the USB, and a full charge is achieved in about 3 hours and lasts for about 14 hours of continuous playback.

Considering the concept and design, the SwiMP3 delivers amazing sound quality. The music is audible through the headset on dry land, but when you take the unit underwater, the audio is transformed into an unbelievably clear high-fidelity experience. The SwiMP3 headset consists of two speakers that are connected by a cable. Each speaker measures a mere 1-1/2x3 inches, and a plastic clip attaches them to any standard swim mask or set of goggles.

You can easily load music into the SwiMP3 with a drag-and-drop action, or you can use the free SwiMP3 Media Manager software that is downloadable from www.finisinc.com. Audio files must be in MP3 or WMA format, and the Media Manager software can search your computer for songs and help convert them to the proper format if necessary.

The SwiMP3 has four control buttons for power on, power off, volume and track navigation. Each button also has a secondary function that is engaged by holding the button down, and while this takes some getting used to, the expanded functionality is worth it. Since you cannot see the buttons while you are wearing the SwiMP3, it requires a bit of practice to locate each button by feel and master the different functions.

The SwiMP3 is ideal for anyone who swims for fun or training. When attached to a pair of goggles or a swim mask, the speakers rest comfortably against the sides of your face, with the wire draped just behind your head. The strap of the goggles holds the speakers firmly in position, so you can swim as rigorously as you like. Contrary to our expectations, the wire doesn't get in your way, even while swimming the backstroke.

If you like to swim and love your music, but have not been able to find a product to bring these two passions together, the Finis SwiMP3 is for you.

Pros: Listen to music underwater, 8-hour rechargeable battery life, simple drop-and-drag music downloads, iTunes-compatible
Cons: Requires goggles or swim mask, buttons are not intuitive and require a lot of practice
