Eton FR400 Emergency Crank Radio
Date Published: 9/21/07
Eton's FR400 Emergency Crank Radio makes sure you and your family are always prepared and informed. Endorsed by the American Red Cross, the FR400 lets you tune to AM and FM radio stations, plus TV audio (VHF channels 2 to 13). The FR400 can even pick up seven National Weather Service (NOAA) channels, as well as up-to-the-minute weather alerts. When the weather gets ugly, this emergency radio is invaluable.
The water-resistant radio FR400 functions as an all-in-one emergency device, even when the power is on the fritz. The unit can be powered by three AA batteries (sold separately), an AC adapter (included), a built-in and easy-to-crank hand-powered generator or an internal NiMH rechargeable battery pack that takes charge from the hand crank or the AC adapter. Turning the hand crank for 90 seconds generates enough juice for about an hour of operation. An antenna is built in, and the FR400 also has a telescoping antenna for enhanced FM and National Weather Service reception. The compact and lightweight (1.5 pounds) FR400 comes with a convenient carrying case with a shoulder strap.
If that isn't enough, you can even use the FR400 to charge your cell phone. You'll need to purchase a separate adapter tip, but once you do, you'll be able to charge your cell phone even when the power is out. The FR400 sports a 2-1/2-inch speaker that sounds surprisingly clear, and a headphone jack lets you listen privately.
The FR400 doesn't stop there. A multi-LED flashlight is built in, and you can activate a flashing red LED beacon and rescue siren to signal for help or scare off intruders. The flashing red light is a nice bonus, but the flashlight didn't work on the unit we tested, so perhaps quality control is an issue for Eton. Make sure to try out all the features of your FR400 before throwing away the receipt.
Eton contributes 70 cents to the American Red Cross for each FR400 sold. This emergency radio is a must have for every household regardless, but donations to a worthy cause are a positive benefit we will always support. Keep your family and your home prepared for emergencies with the Eton ARC FR400 Emergency Crank Radio.
