Epson Stylus Photo RX700 photo center

Date Published: 2/21/08

The Epson Stylus Photo RX700 is a supremely versatile printer. Epson bills it as an all-in-one photo center, and while it borders on multifunction machine territory, the RX700's focus on photo printing and its lack of fax capabilities prevent it from true all-in-one status.

The RX700 has front and rear paper trays. The front paper tray can hold 150 sheets of plain paper, while the rear can hold 120 sheets of plain paper, 20 sheets of photo paper or 10 envelopes. The RX700 has a built-in transparency unit, so you can scan and print slides and negatives. It also has an integrated 48-bit scanner, allowing you to scan photos and other documents, as well as copy and print documents.

Built-in memory card slots accept most currently popular card formats. The RX700 can also print directly from PictBridge-compatible cameras. A 2-1/2-inch LCD display allows you to preview photos before printing, as well as perform some basic image-editing tasks.

The RX700 supports printing resolutions of up to 5,760X1,440 dpi (optimized). It can print on a variety of paper sizes and stocks, including letter, half-letter, executive, 3-1/2X5-inch and user-definable (as small as 3-1/2 inches or as large as banners up to 44 inches long). It can also print borderless 4X6-inch, 5X7-inch, 8X10-inch and letter-size photos.

Output quality is good for business documents. Text is reasonably sharp, except at small font sizes. Line art generally reproduces well, although very fine lines sometimes break up. There is little or no banding in color images, such as clip art and charts. Output quality for color photos is good to very good, with vivid color and good detail. Output speeds are relatively quick for photos and only a bit slow for business documents.

The RX700 can print directly on inkjet-compatible CD and DVD using its built-in disc tray. It cannot print on standard CD and DVD, but this is a limitation of the media and not the printer.

The Epson Stylus Photo RX700 is bundled with six ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan and light magenta), a USB cable, printer documentation and a CD with software (Epson Easy Photo Fix and ArcSoft PhotoImpression) and printer drivers.

Pros:  Good to excellent output quality, can print directly from memory cards and PictBridge-compatible digital cameras, includes a built-in scanner and transparency unit for scanning slides and negatives, CD and DVD printing
Cons:  Doesn't include fax capabilities, so it can't serve as an all-in-one

Warranty
1 year, limited (United States and Canada)
